Sarasota Approves Purchase Of Land For Red Sox Spring Facility

Sarasota Commissioners Approve Land
Purchase For Red Sox Spring Training Home
Sarasota County (FL) Commissioners "voted 4-0 Tuesday to approve the purchase of the property for a Red Sox spring training stadium," according to Roger Drouin of the Sarasota HERALD-TRIBUNE. The commissioners "OK'd an agreement with the city to buy the property for $4.8[M], and the deal could close as soon as the beginning of October." Sarasota County Commissioner Joe Barbetta said, "We can't get to the Red Sox deal if we don't get this deal." The "negotiated price of $4.8[M] for 1.2 acres is about 7[%] higher than market value -- based on recent sales in the area" (Sarasota HERALD-TRIBUNE, 8/27). In N.Y., Michael Schmidt reports Sarasota "appears to be the only city beyond Fort Myers interested in taking" the Red Sox, although Disney officials are also "making a quiet push." Disney's Wide World of Sports is already home to the Braves' Spring Training. Red Sox COO Mike Dee toured the center in July, but the interest from Sarasota "appears to be the strongest" (N.Y. TIMES, 8/28).

CITI FIELD FIRST: In N.Y., Adam Rubin reports the Red Sox "will be the first opponent" at Citi Field, as the Mets are "scheduling a pair of exhibition games with Boston for the final weekend of spring training" next season (N.Y. DAILY NEWS, 8/28).

SEAT SALE: Braves 3B Chipper Jones "handed over a check for $869 to purchase a pair of seats at Shea Stadium at the conclusion of this season." Baseball HOFer Tom Seaver, former MLBer C Mike Piazza and former ATPer Andre Agassi also "purchased two seats each." The seats Monday went on sale for the general public and are available at mets.com/Shea (N.Y. POST, 8/24).
