Jets Expected To Receive High Bids For Coaches Club PSLs

Jets Likely To Receive High Bids
From Auction For Coaches Club PSLs
Sports industry experts indicated that the auction for PSLs in the Jets' new Coaches Club "could fetch prices close to the cost of a luxury car, and will likely prompt other major-league teams to follow suit," according to Maura McDermott of the Newark STAR-LEDGER. The Jets will be the NFL's "first to hold such an auction," and the Jets said that this fall fans "will bid over the internet and by phone to buy 2,000 [PSLs] for the most exclusive section of the stadium." SportsCorp President Marc Ganis said the strategy "is a wave of the future. It allows them to increase revenues while taking the moral high ground -- they are charging what the fans are willing to pay and not arbitrarily selecting a number." Ganis noted that the 2,000 auctioned PSLs will "likely go for 'a premium' over the $25,000 top flat-price PSL." Ganis: "Will they get a 100[%] premium over that? I don't know about that." Ganis said that he "knew of no other major-league teams to auction" PSLs. McDermott notes the Cubs' auction of 70 season tickets for new seats near the dugout earlier this year was "wildly successful," with prices "40 to 50[%] higher than the regular $220-a-seat price" (Newark STAR-LEDGER, 8/28).

A GIANT PROPOSAL: The GLOBE & MAIL's Angela Delli Santi reported New Jersey Assemblyman Anthony Chiappone is "urging the [Giants] to rethink their plan to sell [PSLs] for every seat in the new football stadium at the Meadowlands." Chiappone is "sponsoring legislation that would ban the sale of [PSLs] at all sports facilities in the state." Chiappone said he considers PSLs "an unfair gouging of fans." Chiappone added that the Jets' plan to "charge only premium season ticket holders is fairer than charging everyone." Giants VP/Communications Pat Hanlon said that the team had "no comment" (GLOBESPORTS.com, 8/27).
