Fashion Takes Center Court At U.S. Open Tennis Tournament

Serena Williams Among Players Paying
Attention To Fashion At U.S. Open
An "emerging trend" among tennis players at the U.S. Open is to "incorporate a cocktail-attire look into their performance clothes, especially if they're playing under the lights at night," according to Samantha Critchell of the AP. Sony Ericsson WTA Tour player Maria Sharapova said that there is "no better place to pull out the stops than the U.S. Open." Sharapova: "It's the place to do something fun and a little out of the box." Sharapova is not playing in this year's tournament due to an injury, but had she played Sharapova "would have worn a stretch velvet dress with silk on the edge of the neckline and straps." WTA player Serena Williams this year has a U.S. Open dress that "also has a sophisticated cocktail-dress vibe," as it is "red with a slim bodice, dropped waist and pleated skirt." ATP Tour player Roger Federer this year is "switching between a polo shirt with an emblazoned RF logo in red for day and a smoke-grey color at night" (AP, 8/26).

A NEW NADAL: The GLOBE & MAIL's Sinclair Stewart writes of ATP Tour player Rafael Nadal and Nike's decision to change his wardrobe, "One was tempted to wonder why either [Nadal] or Nike would choose to alter what is arguably the most distinctive style in the history of men's tennis." N.Y.-based Reach Personal Branding President William Arruda: "I think if he were to do it, it would be a big loss for his brand, because his trademark is that he wears these tank tops and the Capri-style trousers." However, Arruda added that for Nike "the ability to transform the look of such a readily identifiable athlete would carry significant appeal." Nike and Nadal said that they "will likely introduce the new wardrobe later this year, some time after the new season has begun" (GLOBE & MAIL, 8/27).

FAU PAUX? SPORTINGNEWS.com's Dave Larzelere noted the decal on ATP Tour player James Blake's left sleeve during his Monday night match "is in fact the one and only 'NY' of the Mets." Blake's wearing of "an actual Mets symbol on his shirt throughout the match is a new" move, and one that Blake "seems to feel is of dubious legality." In the post-match interview, Blake mentioned that he is "not sure if he'll be allowed to do it again" (SPORTINGNEWS.com, 8/26).
