The Home Depot Will Continue To Sponsor JGR's No. 20 Car

The Home Depot Will Continue To Sponsor JGR's
No. 20 Car, To Be Driven By Logano In '09
The Home Depot has renewed its sponsorship of Joe Gibbs Racing's No. 20 NASCAR Sprint Cup Series Toyota, which will be driven by Joey Logano on a full-time basis in '09. JGR yesterday also announced that Greg Zipadelli will remain the crew chief of the No. 20 car. Logano will make his Sprint Cup debut at the September 6 Chevy Rock & Roll 400 at Richmond Int'l Raceway in a Home Depot-sponsored car bearing the No. 02 and a reverse color scheme (JGR). Joe Gibbs said The Home Depot's sponsorship of the No. 20 car “is a very long-term contract” (“NASCAR Now,” ESPN2, 8/25). The Home Depot Senior VP & CMO Frank Bifulco: "We see in Joey a mature young man who has the value, the work ethic and the competence. You look at what he's done in a car already, that gives us confidence going forward" (CHARLOTTE OBSERVER, 8/26).

HANDING OVER THE KEYS: JGR President J.D. Gibbs said of Logano, "From an experience standpoint, we were really careful from day one and we didn't want to rush him. He's been here three years. If it took him three more years to get to Cup that would be fine. The reality of it is we watched everything he did running. I think what you saw is a guy who the talent is there" (K.C. STAR, 8/25). YAHOO SPORTS' Jerry Bonkowski wrote JGR in appointing Logano as the full-time driver of the No. 20 Cup entry next season is "essentially betting the fortunes of a $20[M] operation on someone who's never even competed in a single Sprint Cup race." Bonkowski: "Let's hope [JGR Owner Joe] Gibbs is right in his decision to put Logano in the No. 20 so soon. I'd hate to see Gibbs a few years from now slapping his forehead saying, 'What the heck was I thinking?'" (SPORTS.YAHOO.com, 8/25). YAHOO SPORTS' Bob Margolis notes Logano's emergence "signals the start of the next wave of young drivers poised to move into the Cup series," alongside current Nationwide drivers London Cassill, Colin Braun and Brad Keselowski (SPORTS.YAHOO.com, 8/26).

ANTICIPATED DEBUT: Motorsports Authentics President & CEO Mark Dyer and his company is "ready to start production immediately on diecast cars featuring" Logano. Dyer said of Logano's entrance to the Cup series, "The only comparison I would make is when (Dale Earnhardt Jr.) was a Nationwide driver before he became a Cup driver." ESPN.com's David Newton noted while Logano's sales "aren't expected to reach Earnhardt's level immediately, early indications are he'll be as strong off the track as he has been on it in the Nationwide Series, where earlier this season he became the youngest driver to win, and in only his third start" (ESPN.com, 8/25).
