Peterson's Future With Chiefs May Hinge On Team's Performance

Peterson's Job May Depend
On Team's On-Field Success
Chiefs President & GM Carl Peterson, for the "first time in his career," is entering a season in which the "prevailing wisdom at Arrowhead Stadium is this: How the team performs will determine whether he keeps his job," according to Bill Reiter of the K.C. STAR. Peterson, who has held his position with the franchise since '88, said, "I've never had anybody come up and say, 'Boy, you're on the hot seat and you're going to get fired this year if you guys don't win four games or five or six games.' Nobody's said it to me. Including [Chiefs Chair] Clark Hunt." But sources said that Arrowhead is "so rife with speculation that Peterson is on the hot seat that people discuss the end of his career over lunches, at the coffee pot and in hushed tones in hallways and meeting rooms." And that talk has "spilled into the NFL at large, from people in rival front offices to agents and even other players." As a result, many within the organization "have chosen sides" between Peterson and Chiefs coach Herm Edwards. Hunt "does not retain the same level of unconditional loyalty that his father [late Owner Lamar Hunt] had for Peterson." Hunt: "To some degree, I think patience is a real virtue when running a professional sports team. On the other hand, I'm sure I'm not as loyal as my father. And probably not as patient." Reiter noted one "running belief within the organization is that Hunt kept Peterson on after last season because he wanted to ensure Edwards will be judged on his 2009 season rather than this year" (K.C. STAR, 8/24).

DOLPHINS: In Ft. Lauderdale, Sarah Talalay reported Dolphin Stadium officials "have created the half theater-half boardroom -- dubbed the 'virtual sales theater' -- to re-create the experience of being at a game live for prospective ticket buyers." The investment of $25,000-30,000 to set up the theater "could be recouped quickly, if a business or individual, for example, plunks down $80,000 for a suite." A recent group of potential buyers also got a "tour of the stadium's $250[M] face-lift and a rare opportunity to go inside the practice bubble at training camp" (South Florida SUN-SENTINEL, 8/23).

BROWNS: Browns VP/Communications Bill Bonsiewicz said that "about 6,000 fans responded to the club's informal online poll" on the brown uniform pants the team wore during its August 18 preseason game against the Giants, and "about 60[%] gave the pants a thumbs down." Bonsiewicz: "We have no plans to wear them again" (Cleveland PLAIN DEALER, 8/24).
