Former NFL Giants GM ERNIE ACCORSI “recently underwent triple-bypass heart surgery.” He “reports he’s doing well and walking up to two miles a day" (Cleveland PLAIN DEALER, 8/24).

STAR SEARCH: Former NFLer Warren Sapp, AVPer Misty May-Treanor and former U.S. sprinter Maurice Greene are among the contestants who will compete on the seventh season of ABC’s “Dancing With the Stars.” The announcement was made live this morning on ABC's "GMA," and ABC’s Sam Champion said of May-Treanor competing just after winning a Gold Medal at the Beijing Games, “That’s a very good get” (“GMA,” ABC, 8/25).

FORWARD PROGRESS: In Boston, Mike Reiss noted 90 coaches this summer took part in the NFL’s minority coaching fellowship program, which provides “training camp coaching positions for minority coaches with NFL teams.” Partially as a result of the fellowship, a “record number of minority coaches (22) will be either assistant head coaches or coordinators this season” (BOSTON GLOBE, 8/24).

Negron Dedicates Newest Book To Steinbrenner
BOOK REPORT: Yankees advisor RAY NEGRON has dedicated his second book, “The Greatest Story Never Told: The Babe And Jackie,” to Yankees Chair GEORGE STEINBRENNER, “thanking him for changing his life.” Negron writes, “To George M. Steinbrenner and the Steinbrenner family, whose loyalty to the less fortunate of the world has allowed me to do what I do. Boss, you made me somebody. Thank you” (N.Y. DAILY NEWS, 8/25)….In Charlotte, Adam Bell wrote Brian Donovan’s “HARD DRIVING: THE WENDELL SCOTT STORY” is a “sad, illuminating biography” of NASCAR’s first black driver. Donovan “details how Scott entered NASCAR through the back door.” Donovan “doesn’t sugarcoat the unseemly side of Scott’s character.” The story “deserves to be told, and Donovan tells it well” (CHARLOTTE OBSERVER, 8/24).

NAMES: AEG Chair PHIL ANSCHUTZ for this week’s Democratic National Convention in Denver has leased “several vintage train cars from [AEG’s] ski train to the Chicago-based Pritzker family, owners of the Hyatt hotel chain” (LAS VEGAS REVIEW-JOURNAL, 8/25). Meanwhile, Nuggets F CARMELO ANTHONY “supports Democratic candidate Barack Obama and hopes to meet him at the convention at Pepsi Center” (BOSTON GLOBE, 8/24)….Bucks coach SCOTT SKILES has purchased Indiana Univ. men’s basketball coach TOM CREAN’s 13-room home in Mequon, Wisconsin, for $1,375,000 (MILWAUKEE JOURNAL SENTINEL, 8/24).
