Wild Owner CRAIG LEIPOLD Wednesday at Raspberry Island in St. Paul treated "nearly 2,500 Wild season-ticket holders ... to a barbecue." The attendees then "were able to watch the Olympic hockey film 'Miracle' that was shown on an outdoor screen" (ST. PAUL PIONEER PRESS, 8/22).

PENNY FOR HIS THOUGHTS: In Memphis, Dan Wolken reports former NBAer and Univ. of Memphis (UM) alumnus PENNY HARDAWAY "has given the school $1[M] to help fund an athletic [HOF] on campus that will bear his name." The HOF, which will be 30,000 square feet, will cost "an estimated $4[M]." UM AD R.C. JOHNSON Thursday said that the HOF is "being funded through private contributions, and construction is scheduled to begin this fall with a planned completion early in 2010" (Memphis COMMERCIAL APPEAL, 8/22).

COACH SPEAK: On Long Island, Neil Best writes NFL Giants coach TOM COUGHLIN's book, "A Team To Believe In," which comes out September 2, "is what you'd expect" from Coughlin. It has "no controversy, no frills, not much in the way of deep emotional insights or behind-the-scenes revelations." The book "is at its best in describing Coughlin's determination to lighten up with players and journalists" (NEWSDAY, 8/22)....In Akron, George Thomas writes the "WOODY HAYES' Ohio State Buckeyes" DVD, which comes out Tuesday, is "a so-so documentary." The documentary is "at its best when it focuses less on football and more on the man," but "the problem for [the movie] is that so many documentaries have come before it that in a lot of cases there's a lot to live up to" (AKRON BEACON JOURNAL, 8/22).

NAMES: The Magic are participating in their third annual Building Magic week this week in the Philadelphia area "at the behest" of G JAMEER NELSON, a Philly native. Nelson's agent STEVE MOUNTAIN's company, Cornerstone Management, "helped organize the week" (PHILADELPHIA INQUIRER, 8/22)....Sources said that Senators C JASON SPEZZA "is buying 'Stone Manor,' a copper-roofed mansion" in Ottawa. The five-bedroom, seven-bathroom home has been listed for C$6M, making it "the most expensive property on the Ottawa market" (OTTAWA CITIZEN, 8/22)....Fox' MICHAEL STRAHAN "paid between [$1.5-2M] for a loft in Manhattan's Tribeca neighborhood." Strahan had "agreed to purchase the 2,000-square-foot, high-floor unit in 2006, but building-permit and other issues delayed the closing" (WALL STREET JOURNAL, 8/22)....CBS' DREW CAREY will serve as the Grand Marshal for the August 31 Pepsi 500 at the Auto Club Speedway of Southern California (AUTORACING1.com, 8/21).
