Jacques Rogge Drawing More Heat For Comments About Usain Bolt

Rogge Receiving Criticism
Over Comments About Bolt
IOC President Jacques Rogge's "ripping of [Jamaica sprinter] Usain Bolt's supposed showboating in two of the most electrifying gold-medal performances of these Games has to be one of the most ill-timed and gutless acts in the modern history of the Olympics," according to YAHOO SPORTS' Dan Wetzel, who writes under the header, "Rogge Rips The Wrong Guy." In reaction to Rogge's comments about Bolt's actions being unsportsmanlike following his world record-setting performances in the 100m and 200m, Wetzel writes, "No one at the track had a problem with [Bolt]; they understood he is everything the sport needs to recover from an era of extreme doping. ... Apparently, Rogge would prefer 12-year-old gymnasts too frightened to crack a smile" (SPORTS.YAHOO.com, 8/22). In Chicago, Philip Hersh wrote Rogge's comments make him "sound like an old man who lived most of his life in an effete, upper-class world." Rogge was trying to spoil "two moments so electric they might get a few more people interested in track and field." Bolt's "immediate exuberance is what made those moments more than just very fast races." Meanwhile, Hersh wrote Rogge "look[s] like a coward" for taking on Bolt after he has been "notoriously silent about China's disrespect about greater openness and respect for human rights" (CHICAGOTRIBUNE.com, 8/21). In DC, Liz Clarke: "I am stunned that the issue [Rogge] finally takes a stand on is Usain Bolt's celebration of his 200m victory, which was one of the greatest achievements in sports. Rogge's language in condemning Bolt's celebration was offensive and patronizing" (WASHINGTONPOST.com, 8/21). In N.Y., Filip Bondy: "Rogge has a lot more important things to worry about than Bolt's antics. His Olympics are filled with other examples of truly bad sportsmanship and remain suspect on the topic of drug use. He rarely singles out athletes for such things, and has more appropriate targets than Bolt." Rogge "should get down on his knees to thank the guy for saving the track meet" (N.Y. DAILY NEWS, 8/22).

FEELING IRIE! In Toronto, Steve Simmons writes of Bolt, "This is a young man bringing breathtaking brilliance and child-like joy simultaneously to the Games. Rogge should be bowing down and thanking him instead of taking shots." There is "no need for the fastest man in the history of mankind to change, we like him just the way he is" (TORONTO SUN, 8/22). In DC, Tom Knott writes, "Bolt is having way too much fun in a discipline that measures greatness by hundreds of a second. He is the sunshine to [U.S. swimmer Michael] Phelps' primal scream. Both exude an air of goofiness" (WASHINGTON TIMES, 8/22). IOC Athletes Commission Chair Frankie Fredericks said, "You can't tell a guy who has run 9.69 [seconds] how to react." Fredericks added of Bolt's behavior after the 100m final, "It's difficult for me to tell you I would not have done it. It was a unique moment for an athlete who has worked very hard" (GUARDIAN.co.uk, 8/22). In L.A., Jerry Crowe writes Bolt is the "type of outsized talent and engaging personality that could lead a track and field revival in the [U.S.], but it's probably too late" (L.A. TIMES, 8/22).
