Hook 'Em: UT Rules Royalties List; Kansas Soars With Title

National titles "paid off handsomely" for LSU, the football champion, and Kansas (KU), the basketball champ, in merchandise sales and licensing revenue, according to Michael Smith of SPORTSBUSINESS JOURNAL. The schools were the big movers in Collegiate Licensing Co.’s (CLC) rankings of the best-selling universities for '07-08 among its 150 client schools. The Univ. of Texas (UT) finished first for the third straight year. LSU rose from 11th to fourth with $5.3M in royalties, a 76% increase from the previous year. KU jumped from 22nd to 14th, the "biggest leap on the CLC list, with $2.5[M] in licensing revenue, a 110[%] increase over last year." UT led all CLC schools with $8.2M in gross royalties, followed by Michigan, Florida, LSU and Notre Dame in the top five. KU made the biggest jump, helped by record-sales fueled by its men's basketball championship. For the '07-08 season, KU reaped $1.5M more than they had budgeted, and "all of that extra money" will go into a scholarship fund that benefits student athletes as well as the general student population. In setting a school royalties record, KU also "set a CLC record for sales generated by basketball national title merchandise at $625,000, which broke the mark of $543,000" that the Univ. of North Carolina hit in '05 . Those sales represent the time from early April to the end of June, when the fiscal year closed. UT topped the $7M mark for the third straight fiscal year, and its $8.2M this past season was "just $70,000 short of the Longhorns’ record year" in '05-06, when they won the BCS football title (SPORTSBUSINESS JOURNAL, 8/18 issue)
