Murdoch Takes Home $27.1M In
Salary, Bonus And Stock Compensation
News Corp. Chair & CEO RUPERT MURDOCH's salary, bonus and stock compensation in the FY ending June 30 rose about 9% to $27.1M, though his overall compensation fell 14% "because of an accounting change that eroded the value of his retirement savings." Murdoch in the last FY received an $8.1M salary and a $17.5M bonus "tied to an increase in News Corp.'s earnings" (WALL STREET JOURNAL, 8/20).

HOOSIER DADDY: Indiana Univ. (IU) formally signed men's basketball coach TOM CREAN to a 10-year, $23.6M deal. Crean will earn a $600,000 base salary, with an additional $15.72M “in outside marketing and promotional income” (Ft. Wayne JOURNAL GAZETTE, 8/19). In Indianapolis, Mark Alesia notes Crean's contract "spells out that his actions 'are a direct reflection on the University' and that he hasn't violated NCAA rules in the past." While former IU men's basketball coach KELVIN SAMPSON's contract "addressed rules for compliance, the subject has its own subheading and long paragraph in Crean's contract." Crean's deal also addressed the "sale, use or possession" of illegal drugs and has a "new clause about gambling on pro or college sports and providing information to gamblers." In addition, unlike Sampson, Crean will receive $15,000 per year for term life insurance, and his family will be allowed to travel to away games at IU's expense (INDIANAPOLIS STAR, 8/20).

NAMES: The Twins Sunday night hosted a fundraiser for the Boys & Girls Clubs of the Twin Cities at Morton's Steakhouse in Minneapolis, where Twins players served as waiters. The 120 guests paid $250 apiece to attend the event, which was expected to raise more than $30,000 (Minneapolis STAR TRIBUNE, 8/19)....Saints RB REGGIE BUSH and his parents are appealing a recent Superior Court decision that "denied their attempt to have a lawsuit against them," brought on by former New Era Sports exec LLOYD LAKE, "settled in confidential arbitration and out of public court." The appeal means that "several anticipated depositions will now be put on hold until the appellate court rules on the arbitration matter" (SAN DIEGO UNION-TRIBUNE, 8/20)....Celtics F GLEN DAVIS yesterday filmed a PSA for The Home for Little Wanderers to promote the agency's annual holiday gift drive (BOSTON GLOBE, 8/20).
