ESPN.com's David Newton reported Roush Fenway Racing (RFR) President GEOFF SMITH "is putting plans in place to retire after the 2009 season." Smith: "That's what we're building for. We've been systematically elevating the responsibilities of several key people, training and training." Smith, who will be 63 when his contract expires after the season and who "runs the business and marketing side of" RFR, has "been instrumental in putting together one of the top sponsorship programs in the garage" (ESPN.com, 8/17).

BUILDING AWARENESS: Suns G STEVE NASH appears in a YouTube video alongside his high-school friend, SIMON IBELL, who has Hunter syndrome, and "calls on the Ontario government to fund an enzyme-replacement therapy" for the disorder (GLOBE & MAIL, 8/19)....Red Sox manager TERRY FRANCONA spoke yesterday at the Strike Out Infection program, which is "part of a national campaign spearheaded by Francona and Covidien Ltd.," a health-care product company. Owens Agrees To Pay $769,118
To Settle Suit With Eagles
NAMES: Giants DE OSI UMENYIORA has filed suit in Manhattan Supreme Court against Baby G Inc. Founder & CEO JEFFREY GERSON, claiming that he invested $125,000 with Gerson and the company to “start his own clothing line.” The project “never went anywhere” (N.Y. POST, 8/16)….Cowboys WR TERRELL OWENS has agreed to pay the Eagles $769,118 to settle a suit the Eagles filed against him seeking to recover bonus money Owens “failed to repay after being suspended from the team.” The Eagles in an April complaint said that Owens owed $769,118 after a January ruling by an NFL arbitrator found that the team was "entitled to about $1.7[M] in bonus money paid to Owens when he joined the team" (BLOOMBERG NEWS, 8/15)....Saints coach SEAN PAYTON will team up with First Bank & Trust to help its marketing efforts to reach more customers in Louisiana and Mississippi. The bank donated $50,000 to the coach's non-profit initiative, Payton's Play It Forward Foundation (First Bank & Trust)....Sources said that Chicago Police "are investigating whether the Monday morning shootings of two men near the Rock 'n' Roll McDonald's resulted from a fight that spilled out of a club where there was a party for" Grizzlies F ANTOINE WALKER (CHICAGO SUN-TIMES, 8/19).
