Former SMI President & CEO HUMPY WHEELER this week "will announce that he's forming his own outfit, The Wheeler Co.," according to Michael Smith of SPORTSBUSINESS JOURNAL. The Wheeler Co. "will primarily focus on consulting within motorsports," with Wheeler's "pet project ... a made-for-TV racing series that he's pitching to networks." Some of the show's "racing details are being formulated." Wheeler said that he "hopes to work with the NASCAR [HOF] when it opens in 2010 -- he's played a significant role with its formation already -- while also getting into driver representation." In business with Wheeler will be his son, Velocity Sports & Entertainment VP & GM TRIP WHEELER, and his daughter, Charlotte-based Wheeler TV President PATTI WHEELER. Humpy will serve as The Wheeler Co. Chair, while Trip will be President. Trip "plans to stay with Velocity as an independent contractor," and Patti "will maintain her position" with Wheeler TV (SPORTSBUSINESS JOURNAL, 8/18 issue). Wheeler: "I've got plenty of energy left, and they certainly do, too. We think we can cause some changes and create some innovative, interesting things." Wheeler added, "I don't really want to go to work for anybody anymore" (CHARLOTTE OBSERVER, 8/18).
