Lind Defends Preseason Crowd, Says Dolphins-Bills Will Sell Out

Lind Says Reports Of Free Tickets To Steelers-
Bills Game At Rogers Centre Were Exaggerated
Rogers Communications Vice Chair Phil Lind said reports that about 17,000 tickets were handed out for free for last Thursday's Steelers-Bills preseason game at Rogers Centre were "grossly exaggerated," according to Mike Zeisberger of the TORONTO SUN. Lind: "It's an undeserved knock." He added that many free tickets "went to the United Way and the Canadian armed forces." Lind added, "I don't know of many NFL teams that have a full house in the pre-season." Lind said for the December 7 Dolphins-Bills game at Rogers Centre, "I guarantee there will not be an empty seat for that game. And the (full house) will not be a result of free tickets, either" (TORONTO SUN, 8/16). However, in Calgary, Bruce Dowbiggin wrote, "The cold fact for [Rogers Centre President & CEO] Ted Rogers and the promoters of NFL in Canada is that 5,000 seats went unsold, and a lot more might have gone begging had platoons of fans from Pittsburgh not ventured to Toronto for the experience." Dowbiggin: "Maybe those reports of Torontonians losing their collective minds over the NFL in Toronto were a tad exaggerated." But "defenders of the CFL shouldn't take too much comfort from the mediocre debut of the NFL notion in Canada." The "first act in the drama of the NFL's invasion of CFL territory may have been a draw, but only a fool would say that it will remain that way forever" (CALGARY HERALD, 8/17).

GUARDED TERRITORY: CFL Montreal Alouettes Owner Bob Wetenhall said of the NFL in Canada, "I can't imagine any way this will be helpful and benefit the growth of our game. I'm concerned, as are some of our colleagues. I would also say we're watching these events closely and are monitoring them closely."Another CFL exec said, "This is a big problem, for obvious reasons. We're taking this threat seriously, and it's potentially devastating on the Ontario market." CFL Commissioner Mark Cohon was "invited to Thursday's game by Rogers executives, but politely declined, saying he had a previous commitment." Cohon: "If holding one game a year in Toronto keeps the Bills in Buffalo, that's our goal. Anything more, we're not supportive of. I've expressed concern. NFL owners have read this, and understand how important the CFL game is to us." Meanwhile, Toronto Argonauts co-Owner Howard Sokolowski said, "The (organizers of the NFL series of games) say they have a plan whereby both leagues can co-exist. I'd be thrilled to hear it" (Montreal GAZETTE, 8/16).
