Olympic Blog Hound: Bloggers Largely Disappointed In NBC Coverage

Bloggers discuss various aspects of NBC's coverage of the Beijing Games thus far.

"My bigger beef is NBC’s focus on just a few sports as “glamour sports” and relegate the [rest] to basic cable. The other creepy thing is this -- I suspect, quite conscious -- decision by NBC to set up a “US vs China” narrative throughout the games.”

"Does NBC really think I'm going to stay up, sitting on the edge of my sofa, to watch Michael Phelps swim at 10.30pm when he ACTUALLY won his latest gold medals three hours earlier? Well, they're bloody wrong.”

“Watching [Bela Karolyi] interact with Bob Costas in the studio is a thing of pure beauty. He could almost anchor the rest of the Olympics and I wouldn’t miss Costas a bit.”

"With Costas leading the way, viewers have been provided a compelling first week of television that bodes well for these Games to become the network's crowning achievement.”

"The whole POINT of the Olympics is for us to drop our flag waving and come together in the spirit of human achievement. … Offering America exclusive coverage of just Americans completely destroys this spirit and replaces it with the mundane ‘we are the best’ competitive mentality.”

SportsMedia Challenge's BuzzManager analyzed online discussion surrounding NBC's coverage of the 2008 Beijing Olympics. Bloggers praising the coverage were tallied as positive, while bloggers who were critical of the coverage were counted as negative. • The Buzz ranked 7 out of 10, a topic of a high level of interest among sports bloggers
  • Bloggers in the positive category praised the coverage. Many are enjoying the swimming coverage of Michael Phelps' quest for 8 Gold Medals. Commentators Dan Hicks and Rowdy Gaines also received praise. Others also were liking the video coverage available on NBCOlympics.com.
  • Bloggers in the negative category were much more vocal. Many criticized the delayed coverage on the West Coast while the East Coast was able to get live coverage. Others dislike what they perceive to be a focus only on a few events and then only on a select few athletes. There were also complaints about the video coverage online, partly because it was only available on NBC's site and much of the video was not available until after events.
  • Bloggers in the neutral category mentioned the high ratings the telecasts were receiving as well as the success of NBCOlympics.com.
