This Week's Newsmakers: SEC Inks 15-Year Deal With CBS

THE DAILY each Friday offers our take on the performances over the past week of people and entities in sports business. Here are this week’s newsmakers.

SEC Football To Call CBS Home For 15 Years
WINSEC -- America’s premier college football conference re-ups with CBS in a 15-year deal that includes digital and streaming rights for football and basketball. And the conference is not done dealing, as negotiations with ESPN continue with an agreement reportedly near. The CBS deal, and a possible deal with the Worldwide Leader, will continue to increase the SEC’s media exposure, while also fattening the conference’s coffers. The conference may still have enough programming for its own network, but the long-term deal makes an SEC network less likely, or necessary.

LOSE: MLS GALAXY -- It was not supposed to happen like this. After signing David Beckham, the club was supposed to be the model MLS franchise. But one year later, the team is being called “a mess,” and AEG is finally forced to concede that a new direction is needed. After missing the playoffs the last two years and in the midst of another tough season on the pitch, the team finally shows President & GM Alexi Lalas the door and cuts ties with coach Ruud Gullit, who had a tough time adjusting to soccer in the States.

DRAWPGA CHAMPIONSHIP-- Padraig Harrington hoisted the Wanamaker Trophy after overtaking SERGIO GARCIA on the back nine in a thrilling final round at Oakland Hills during the year's last major. But was anyone still watching at that point? All but 20 minutes of CBS’ coverage Saturday was washed-out, and with the Olympics starting and Tiger still on the shelf, many viewers took a pass on golf last weekend.
