Epstein (r) Denies Report
Of Split With Lucchino |
Red Sox GM Theo Epstein has denied an SI.com report that indicated that he and Red Sox President & CEO Larry Lucchino "were heading for a split," according to Nick Cafardo of the BOSTON GLOBE. Lucchino said of the rumors, "Nothing (to it). Speculation like this comes up every once in a while. A few weeks ago I was rumored to be going north (to Toronto), this time to California. The fact is, I love Boston, New England, and the Red Sox and I want to finish my baseball career here with my family and my partners and my colleagues" (BOSTON GLOBE, 8/14).
HEADED FOR THE WEST COAST? SI.com's Jon Heyman yesterday wrote, "Word is that the original vote at the top of Boston's hierarchy about whether to trade [LF Manny] Ramirez was 2-2," with Epstein and Red Sox Chair Tom Werner voting for a trade and Lucchino and Red Sox Owner John Henry voting against. That "latest split vote may be behind growing speculation Lucchino could leave after this year." And while there has been speculation that Lucchino could join the Dodgers, a "major impediment" that could prevent such a move is Dodgers Vice Chair & President Jamie McCourt (SI.com, 8/13). ESPN's Peter Gammons, in a Q&A on BOSTON.com, said, "I do know that [Dodger Owner] Frank McCourt would love to bring Lucchino to the Dodgers to straighten out the archaic mess in LA. But I was also told by someone close to Larry and with the Red Sox that there is no way that John Henry and Tom Werner would let Larry go" (BOSTON.com, 8/13).
