ESPN Profiles Randy Moss' Venture Into NASCAR's Truck Series

ESPN Profiles Moss' Venture Into NASCAR
ESPN’s “E:60” Tuesday examined Patriots WR Randy Moss’ part ownership of Moss Motorsports and its Craftsman Truck Series team. Moss said, “It was always a dream to be sort of in something like this.” Moss told NASCAR “if they want me to help them with their diversity program and try to bring African-Americans or other ethnic ... groups into this sport then I’m willing to do that.” ESPN NASCAR analyst Brad Daugherty, who last month bought a 33% stake in the new Nationwide Series JTG Daugherty Racing team, said of Moss' role in the sport as an African-American, “He has big responsibility, just like I do. He has to realize everyone’s watching him and everyone has expectations of him, good or bad, including me. I want to see him selfishly compete and be a great torchbearer for one of the minority participants in this sport because there’s so few of us.” ESPN’s Rachel Nichols noted it costs between $4-7M annually to field a Craftsman Truck Series team, and Moss Motorsports “has not yet been able to bring in a full-time sponsor." But Nichols added the team "has managed to find plenty of sponsorship on a per race basis and Moss has pledged to cover any extra costs himself.” Moss: “My pockets are not hurting. (But) if it gets to a point to where I see it getting into my family’s life and really going down, then I think I might take another alternative. But I don’t see that anytime soon.” Moss added, “I’m in this for the long haul and I don’t plan to stop (in the Truck Series)” (“E:60,” ESPN, 8/12).

LET'S GO CAMPING: Dover Int'l Speedway has inked a multi-year deal for Camping World to title sponsor the track's NASCAR Sprint Cup Series race. When the Camping World RV 400 is held on September 21, it will mark the third consecutive year the race has had a different title sponsor. As part of the deal, Camping World "will open a temporary, 6,400-square-foot store in the speedway's new FanZone" (Delaware NEWS JOURNAL, 8/12).

NOTES: Quick Lane Tire & Auto Center will sponsor Wood Brothers Racing's No. 21 Ford driven by Bill Elliot for the Sprint Cup Series Sharpie 500 at Bristol Motor Speedway on August 23. The company "plans to celebrate its 500th store opening with the sponsorship," its first foray into NASCAR (SCENEDAILY.com, 8/13)....NASCAR has "downplayed reports of failing interest in the Craftsman Truck Series, saying it would continue next year with a full 25-race schedule." NASCAR is seeking a title sponsor for the series, as Craftsman's deal expires at the end of this season (FLORIDA TIMES-UNION, 8/13).
