"Madden NFL 09" First-Day Sales Strong, Exceed Expectations

First night retail checks of sales for EA Sports' "Madden NFL 09," done by brokerage firm Sterne Agee, "showed that sell-through for the game is up 'low single digits' over last year," and Sterne Agee analyst Arvind Bhatia said initial sales of the game "appear better than expected," according to Kris Graft of EDGE magazine. Bhatia said that Sterne Agee "expects year-on-year sales of Madden to be down 10[%], but he said sell-through could actually end up 'flattish' if current trends continue." Bhatia "was also encouraged by strong initial reviews" for the game (EDGE-ONLINE.com, 8/12). Bhatia added that "channel checks are promising," and shares of EA rose 2.2% yesterday (HOLLYWOOD REPORTER, 8/13).

REVIEWS: YAHOO SPORTS' Matthew Darnell gives "Madden" an "A-," and wrote there are "enough visual improvements, new animations and subtle little additions that make the game worth owning, if for no other reason than every time a new Madden is released, there's a new best football video game ever." The game "looks amazing and plays brilliantly, just as it always has" (SPORTS.YAHOO.com, 8/12). However, in St. Pete, Joshua Gillin wrote, "Just like [Jets QB] Brett Favre, 'Madden NFL 09' is chock full of changes that may or may not have been needed, depending on whom you ask." It is not that Madden is "any better or worse than previous years ... it's just that the new stuff exposes a growing problem in video games: overall complexity." Gillin: "While I decry the new Madden IQ gimmick for not quite living up to its billing, ... the depth of features is astonishing" (ST. PETERSBURG TIMES, 8/12).

MADDEN HOLIDAY: Titans QB Vince Young Tuesday was "passing out copies of Madden NFL '09 just hours after the game was released in stores." Titans WR Paul Williams: "This is kind of like a national holiday for males between the ages of 15-30, when Madden comes out. Vince is on top of it. He knows how important it is" (Nashville TENNESSEAN, 8/13).
