Caught Stealing? Handful Of MLB Scouts Linked To Gambling Probe

MLB Scouts Linked To Gambling Probe
Former Nationals part-time scout Frank Falzarano is at the center of a gambling probe by MLB that "has led to the firing of one scout and could result in disciplinary action against at least seven others," according to Mike Fish of ESPN.com. The investigation has "identified 'seven or eight' other scouts who bet through Falzarano," who in April plead guilty to "felony enterprise corruption and gambling charges." Sources "identified one of the alleged bettors" fingered in the probe as Orioles scout Alan Marr, who was fired last month. Sources said that "none of the scouts is believed to have bet on baseball." MLB's newly formed investigative unit is assisting the N.Y. police in the investigation, and a report on the findings is expected to be sent to MLB Commissioner Bud Selig within 30 days (ESPN.com, 8/11).

BASEBALL'S NEXT SCANDAL? An MLB official said MLB's investigation into "signing kickbacks in Latin America" is the "next steroids scandal." A GM added, "Once people start singing, this is going to be widespread." ESPN.com's Peter Gammons wrote Congress is "going to want to know how MLB didn't know what was going on" (ESPN.com, 8/11).
