People & Personalities: Calabro May Call Seahawks' '09 Preseason

Calabro May Call Preseason
Games For Seahawks In '09
In Tacoma, Frank Hughes reported there is "a good chance" former Sonics announcer Kevin Calabro, who will be the MLS Sounders' play-by-play TV voice starting next season, "could announce the [Seahawks'] three preseason games next year." Calabro broadcasted Friday's Seahawks-Vikings game when regular preseason play-by-play announcer Verne Lundquist "had a previous commitment." Lundquist's contract with the team is up after this preseason, and Hughes notes the Sounders and Seahawks "are under the same corporate umbrella" (Tacoma NEWS TRIBUNE, 8/10).

MAKING IT WORK: In K.C., Jeffrey Flanagan wrote under the header, "MNF Crew Might Just Be Getting it." ESPN play-by-play announcer Mike Tirico "has become skilled at steering the chit-chat back to the game at hand." During Monday's Bengals-Packers preseason game, Tirico was "roping in" the Ron Jaworski-Tony Kornhesier show "when it got loose." For the most part Monday, the "MNF" crew "seemed guarded against going overboard" on the Jets QB Brett Favre matter. Flanagan: "That deserves some applause" (KANSASCITY.com, 8/12).

ON THE FLY: The Flyers have named Comcast SportsNet (CSN) Philadelphia analyst Chris Therien radio analyst. Therien replaces former NHLer Brian Propp, who has resigned. Therien "has served as a hockey analyst on CSN Philadelphia's "Post Game Live" and also "was a part-timer on WIP-AM and has done work for TSN and the NHL Network" (PHILADELPHIA INQUIRER, 8/12).

NOTES: KOMO-AM Mariners reporter Shannon Drayer, who covered the team for six years for the station, Friday was "unexpectedly fired." Drayer said that she "was told it was a cost-cutting move" by the station, which is in its last year of broadcasting Mariners games (SEATTLE POST-INTELLIGENCER, 8/9)....Boston's WCVB-ABC weekend sports broadcaster Bob Halloran will join ESPN Radio 890 Thursday. Halloran will team up with 890 host Mike Salk to host the "Salk & Halloran" show, which will air weekdays from 12:00-2:00pm ET (BOSTON HERALD, 8/12).
