CBS Earns 3.0 Overnight Rating For PGA Championship Final Round

CBS' Overnight Rating For Final Round PGA
Championship Coverage Down 55% From '07
CBS Sunday for its coverage of the final round of the PGA Championship, won by Padraig Harrington, earned a 3.0/6 overnight rating from 2:00-7:00pm ET, down 55.9% from a 6.8/15 overnight for the final round of the '07 event, which Tiger Woods won (THE DAILY). USA TODAY's Michael Hiestand reports CBS for Saturday's third-round coverage, during which play was rained out and the net aired the final round of the '00 PGA Championship featuring Woods, drew a 1.0 overnight rating, down 78% from last year. Hiestand: "For CBS, things couldn't have gone much worse" (USA TODAY, 8/12). In Orlando, Hal Boedeker reported with the event running into primetime, CBS had an audience of 7.8 million viewers at 7:00pm ET (ORLANDOSENTINEL.com, 8/11).

IN THE ROUGH: GOLF.com's Dick Friedman wrote the 3.0 overnight rating for the final round "bodes poorly for NBC's return to the Tour over Labor Day weekend for" the Deutsche Bank Championship, the second FedEx Cup playoff event. Ratings for the "post-U.S. Open Tour events this summer have been uniformly dismal," and with the "possible exception of the Sept. 19-21 Ryder Cup (also on NBC), the Nielsens almost certainly will stay in the doldrums until Tiger's expected return in 2009" (GOLF.com, 8/11). DAILY VARIETY's Stuart Levine notes ABC's coverage of the British Open in July, which Harrington also won, "registered a 15% decrease" from last year's event (DAILY VARIETY, 8/12). GOLF DIGEST's John Hawkins wrote of Saturday's coverage, "That was awfully clever of CBS to schedule a washout, ... then use the rain delay to show a replay" of the '00 event. Hawkins: "Tiger Woods vs. Bob May, one of the great dramas of the modern era, instead of watching Sergio [Garcia] miss three-footers? Thank goodness for August thunderstorms" (GOLFDIGEST.com, 8/10). ESPN.com's Jason Sobel wrote of CBS showing the '00 event, "You've got to wonder if a classic tournament featuring Tiger Woods from eight years ago will actually receive better ratings than today's live event" (ESPN.com, 8/9).
