Dawes Hopes To Make Connections With
Sponsors While Attending Beijing Olympics
GLORY DAYS ...: In N.Y., Stephanie Clifford reports the Olympics are "not just moneymakers for the current athletes, but for former ones as well." For past Olympians, the "ability to cash in on one's former fame peaks every four years, because corporate sponsors prefer to work with athletes when their signature sports are in the news." For companies, sponsoring former Olympians offers an "instant way to evoke nostalgia." Many retired athletes "make a living out of their former glory, giving motivational speeches and making appearances for corporations." Octagon Dir of Olympics & Action Sports Peter Carlisle, who reps U.S. swimmer Michael Phelps, among others, said that for a past Olympian, showing up at the current Games is "make-or-break if you want to do business with AT&T, for example." Carlisle: "It's a one-time thing that, if it goes well, will mean you'll have repeat opportunities in the future." Clifford notes the corporations that "spend millions to sponsor the Olympics hold plenty of events during the Games for their clients and employees, and the presence of former Olympians adds some glitter." Former U.S. Gold Medal-winning gymnast Dominique Dawes, who is at the Beijing Games, said, "My goal is to work with a number of sponsors, not just at the Olympic Games, but more importantly, even afterwords." Dawes said that her "goals include opening a gymnastics camp and clinic, 'and to get those things off the ground, it's important to get sponsorship'" (N.Y. TIMES, 8/12).

... THEY'LL PASS YOU BY: The GLOBE & MAIL's Brian Milner reported while "few of Canada's summer Olympians have managed to parlay their successes into lucrative corporate sponsorship or endorsement gigs," Olympians at the Beijing Games will "find it particularly tough to turn gold medals into gold" because of the 2010 Vancouver Olympics. Canadian companies are "pouring most of their sports marketing dollars into promotions tied" to the Vancouver Games. One marketing exec said, "In the marketing game, the second Beijing is over, the only thing that will matter to Canadian corporations is Vancouver and Whistler." Toronto-based Landmark Group President Elliott Kerr said of corporations, "They've only got so much money. And I suspect that if they had a chance to increase budgets, they would be spending more in Vancouver, not splitting it" (GLOBE & MAIL, 8/11).
