Galaxy President & GM Lalas, Coach Gullit Leave Franchise

Galaxy Parts Ways
With Alexi Lalas
MLS Galaxy President & GM Alexi Lalas "was shown the door" with the team in a seven-game winless streak and with a 6-8-5 overall record, while Ruud Gullit "resigned as coach after only nine months," according to Grahame Jones of the L.A. TIMES. Galaxy Assistant GM Tom Payne "will take over Lalas' duties on an interim basis, concentrating on the business side and assisted on the soccer side" by Galaxy Dir of Soccer Paul Bravo. AEG President & CEO Tim Leiweke, whose company owns the Galaxy, said that yesterday's developments "cleared the way for the Galaxy to 'straighten the ship out' and regain forward momentum." Lalas, who previously worked for AEG as President & GM of the Earthquakes and MetroStars, "will not move into another position with the company, at least for the moment." Leiweke: "I think as an organization we need to go in a different direction here. We need to get rid of the tension and the stress and the issues that we have had." Leiweke said that Galaxy MF David Beckham's "camp had not had a significant role" in the decisions (L.A. TIMES, 8/12).

CRISIS CONTROL: In L.A., Scott Wolf writes the departure of Lalas, "dubbed the Isiah Thomas of MLS [GMs] by one publication, is unlikely to bother too many people." Lalas' "power was limited because Gullit tended to make more personnel decisions along with Beckham" (L.A. DAILY NEWS, 8/12). YAHOO SPORTS' Martin Rogers wrote the Galaxy is "once more a club in crisis." Lalas "set high standards for himself, could not live up to them, and should not be shocked at being shunted unceremoniously out of the door." Given the "strength of AEG's actions, it appears that" Leiweke and AEG Chair Phil Anschutz "feel a complete overhaul is needed" (SPORTS.YAHOO.com, 8/11). ESPNSOCCERNET.com's Steve Davis wrote, "Honestly, they just can't get anything right out there. The team is a mess. ... The field is little better than a good dog track." If there is a "single brain cell working at [The Home Depot Center] today, nobody from 19 Entertainment, Beckham's management group, will get so much as a shot glass full of input in the new GM and coaching hire." At some point, Leiweke "should man up and accept some responsibility." He "sets the tone as the club sings the tune of entitlement" (ESPNSOCCERNET.com, 8/11).
