Miller Out Of Hospital After
Surviving Near-Fatal Heart Attack |
Jazz Owner Larry Miller Friday held a 90-minute news conference in which he revealed that he "suffered a heart attack June 10 and almost died 'at least four times' while battling kidney failure and gastrointestinal bleeding in the weeks since," according to Ross Siler of the SALT LAKE TRIBUNE. Miller Friday was released from the hospital after a 59-day stay. Miller, who at the news conference sat in a wheelchair and was joined by his wife, Gail, and his son, Larry H. Miller Group of Companies CEO Greg Miller, "described rebuilding his health from 'below zero.'" Larry Miller's health over the past two months had been "such a closely guarded secret that even top executives and some family members didn't know the extent of his struggles." Miller said that he wanted to hold the news conference soon after his release to "end speculation about his health." Miller on June 10 suffered the heart attack at his home, and his kidneys, "already compromised by diabetes, failed as a result of a dye doctors used to monitor his heart condition." Miller went on kidney dialysis and "waited for more than six weeks to learn if his kidneys would resume working." Miller "suffered another scare on July 30, losing eight pints of blood and undergoing surgery to repair the bleeding caused by a series of ulcers." Miller: "If you knew some of the details of the side issues, it's pretty remarkable I'm here." Miller last Monday underwent a second surgery to correct internal bleeding, and will need "another six to eight weeks of physical therapy before he is able to walk again" (SALT LAKE TRIBUNE, 8/9). Miller said the hospitalization was the "most physically challenging time of my life" (DESERET NEWS, 8/9). In Utah, Brad Rock reports "no fewer than eight TV cameras and a couple of dozen reporters were on hand, as well as numerous employees from [Miller's] business enterprises." The conference aired live on TV and radio (DESERET NEWS, 8/9).
CHANGING OF THE GUARD: Miller said that Greg Miller "would be the Jazz's decision maker going forward, although he acknowledged the important decisions that will need to be made next summer." Larry Miller: "I won't have any involvement at all." Jazz Fs Carlos Boozer and Mehmet Okur and G Kyle Korver all have the option to opt out of their contracts following the '08-09 season, and Larry Miller said, "It's possible that I would be drawn into those discussions, but only if asked" (SALT LAKE TRIBUNE, 8/9).
