Weavers Providing Financial Assistance
To St. Johns River Environmental Group |
Jaguars Owners WAYNE and DELORES BARR WEAVER Thursday "beefed up efforts to block Central Florida from tapping the St. Johns River for water." The Weavers said that they will "give as much as $150,000 to the St. Johns Riverkeeper, an environmental group that has stirred mounting public opposition and filed legal actions to prevent Central Florida from using the river as a major supply of water" (ORLANDO SENTINEL, 8/8).
TEE'D OFF: In Detroit, David Ashenfelter profiles Ann Arbor, Michigan, resident DON SIMONS under the header, “Ann Arbor Man Wants Credit For PGA’s Youth Golf Program.” Simons claims that the PGA of America and the World Golf Foundation with the First Tee program “pirated his idea for teaching young people about golf, character and life.” Simons: “By design or by oversight, someone took my visionary concept.” Simons seeks to be "credited and compensated for his work” (DETROIT FREE PRESS, 8/8).
TAX MAN COMETH: Broward County (FL) records indicate that the IRS has "filed a $228,806.21 lien -- income tax owed for 2006," against AFL Cleveland Gladiators President BERNIE KOSAR. Kosar also is "delinquent on his 2007 property tax" for his Weston, Florida, home, and "failed to pay $52,724.95 due last March 31 and now owes $59,881.49 with penalties, interest and other charges." Kosar said that the "tax bills fell through the cracks," and he "intends to make good." Kosar: "I just found out about it" (MIAMI HERALD, 8/7).
