Jets Not Using Favre To Pitch PSLs, But His Arrival Helps Effort
 |
| Favre Likely To Boost Jets' PSL Sales Efforts |
The Jets indicated that newly acquired QB Brett Favre will "not be used to sell" PSLs for the team's new Meadowlands stadium, as Favre's likeness "will not be on deluxe brochures or in television, radio and online pitches," according to Richard Sandomir of the N.Y. TIMES. The Jets last month said that they would institute a PSL plan for their new stadium, which they will share with the Giants, but have yet to unveil the pricing plan. Sandomir notes "little is more crucial to [the Jets] than the revenues they will reap from selling seat licenses." Favre's presence "cannot hurt selling" PSLs, and it is "certainly a lovely coincidence that he arrived in time to distract from the certain discontent and anguish about the Jets' misplaced loyalty that will attend" their PSL plan (N.Y. TIMES, 8/8). 16W Marketing co-Founder & President Steve Rosner said that Favre "might ease the anger longtime Jets supporters may feel when [PSL] prices are announced" (BLOOMBERG NEWS, 8/7).
PART OF THE PLAN? BLOOMBERG NEWS' Scott Soshnick wrote it is "difficult to fathom the acquisition of Favre didn't have something to do with the team's" announcement that it would "follow the Giants in the onerous practice of selling" PSLs. If "you were a fan on the fence ... the promise of Favre could pry your wallet open" (BLOOMBERG NEWS, 8/7). Jets Owner Woody Johnson said that the only goal of the Favre trade was to "improve the team." But in N.Y., Judy Battista writes while the Giants "can count on the good will generated from their surprising Super Bowl run to ease the pain of the big ticket," the Jets "needed a cushion, too, and whether intended or not, Favre will be it" (N.Y. TIMES, 8/8). In N.Y., Rich Cimini wrote, "Don't be shocked if your PSL pricing plan arrives in the mail any day now." Jets management "should strike while its PSL-loathing fan base still is basking in the Favre euphoria" (NYDAILYNEWS.com, 8/7). Also in N.Y., Mike Lupica writes the Favre deal "runs some interference" for Johnson, as the PSL fees reportedly "will hit Jets fans even harder than Giants fans have already been hit" (N.Y. DAILY NEWS, 8/8). On Long Island, Wallace Matthews writes Favre's presence "will even make those PSLs at the new stadium a little easier to swallow (and probably a lot more expensive). Lucky for Woody Johnson he held off on setting the prices" (NEWSDAY, 8/8). Jets season-ticket holder Chris Jones said of the trade, "This has nothing to do with improving the team; this is to get everyone excited about the PSLs." Jones added, "It doesn't make me more excited to spend $25,000 so I can have my seats" (NEWSDAY, 8/8).
