Multiple NBA Players Discuss Playing Overseas For The Right Price

NBA Players, Including Wade, Would Consider
Playing Overseas If Offered Enough Money
The globalization of basketball is NBA Commissioner David Stern's "dream, and now that dream is coming true," but it is "starting to look like a nightmare," according to Dan Bickley of the ARIZONA REPUBLIC. There is a "sudden wave of players bolting the league to play basketball overseas." Heat G Dwyane Wade, who will be a free agent after the 2009-2010 season, said of playing overseas, "They throw 30, 40, 50[M] a year at me? I can't turn that down." Raptors F Chris Bosh, who also will be a free agent following the 2009-2010 season, said, "It's definitely real. They haven't made an offer to a superstar yet, but they've made offers to a lot of solid players. ... The summer of 2009 is going to be really big. We're going to see how other teams react. Mainly, it's Olympiakos and Moscow now, but we'll see what other (European) teams are going to do, how they're going to retaliate. And we'll see if those guys who signed want to come back to the [U.S.]." Bickley noted if F Josh Childress can get a $20M deal with Olympiakos, "imagine what a player like [Cavaliers F] LeBron James or [Lakers G] Kobe Bryant could earn. Believe me, they already have." Bryant: "You can't turn down $40[M]. I don't care who you are. If someone turns down 40, I'm beating them up." Wade added, "I think right now it's very exciting. They're starting a new buzz. You start to do a little research, and they got money over there. You stay in the States, you make the max, you make $18[M]. Take out taxes, and you have 9-10. You have an opportunity to go somewhere and make 25-30 tax-free? We might have to pack our bags." Hornets G Chris Paul: "It would definitely be something I'd consider" (AZCENTRAL.com, 8/7).

CONSIDER THIS: James, when asked yesterday if he "ever imagined the possibility of playing abroad," said, "Did I ever imagine it? No. Is it a possibility? Yes." James: "Things are changing really fast and you never know. I can't throw all my eggs in one basket." In N.Y., Harvey Araton notes James' sponsor Nike "would have to give such a relocation its blessing" (NYTIMES.com, 8/8). TRUEHOOP's Henry Abbott wrote when Russian sports writer Alexander Chernykh asked Bryant if he'd consider playing in Russia, "there was a lot of laughing, and some jokes, and at some point Bryant responded: 'You cut the check, and I'll bring my Nike checks.'" Chernykh said in an e-mail, "If you're Nike, you'd want your player to be in Moscow, which is one of the world capitals, playing for a well-known team" (ESPN.com, 8/7). Bryant Friday at a U.S. Olympic basketball press conference said of playing overseas, "I'd go. I'd probably go. Like Milan or something like that, where I grew up or something like that. Peace out. Do you know any reasonable person that would turn down [$50M]?" (BOSTON.com, 8/8). Nuggets F Carmelo Anthony said, "If anybody, in any situation, gets offered $50[M], you got to look into it. If somebody offered me $50[M], I got to look into it" (DENVER POST, 8/8). Mavericks G Jason Kidd: "The rest of the world is getting better at basketball and the money is there. That is why we have already seen some guys make the move overseas." Wade: "If LeBron made the jump then you never know. All bets would be off." Jazz F Carlos Boozer: "I'm a businessman. If some team in Europe made me an astronomical offer then I would have to consider it" (GUARDIAN.co.uk, 8/8).
