Former Univ. of San Diego (USD) football coach KEVIN MCGARRY has reached an undisclosed settlement in his wrongful termination suit against the school. McGarry filed suit against USD in '04 after being "fired abruptly in the middle of one of USD's best seasons in 2003." McGarry was replaced by current Stanford football coach JIM HARBAUGH. Before the settlement, the court ruled that USD officials "were entitled to more than $115,000 in attorneys' fees from McGarry after they succeeded in having his defamation claims against them struck from the suit" (SAN DIEGO UNION-TRIBUNE, 8/6).

Arenas Discusses Voting In Upcoming
Presidential Election In Recent Blog Post
JUMP BALL: Wizards G GILBERT ARENAS on his blog wrote of the upcoming U.S. presidential election, "It's hard for me to vote, because since I've been in the NBA I've been in the upper class so I've been a Republican." But Arenas wrote it is "hard because you see a better looking president" in presumptive Democratic nominee BARACK OBAMA. Arenas: "At the end of the day, our votes don't really matter. ... If [AL] GORE wins by thousands of votes and [GEORGE] BUSH is president eight years later ... come on" (NBA.com, 8/4).

OPEN SKATE: Capitals Owner TED LEONSIS is featured in SPORTING NEWS TODAY's "My Profile" section, and Leonsis said his superstition is to "wear my unwashed, red Capitals jersey during critical, must-win games."
