Team Darfur co-Founder Joey Cheek Barred From Attending Games

Cheek Likely To Miss Beijing Olympics After
Chinese Government Revokes Travel Visa
The Chinese government yesterday revoked the visa of U.S. Gold Medal-winning  speed skater and human rights group Team Darfur co-Founder Joey Cheek, "effectively barring [him] from attending" the Beijing Games, according to Clarke & Shipley in a front-page piece for the WASHINGTON POST. Cheek, who was scheduled to leave for Beijing today, said, "I asked for a reason, and they said we don't give reasons." Cheek said that Team Darfur co-Founder Brad Greiner "had received a similar call about 10 minutes earlier." Clarke & Shipley write that Chinese officials would "thwart the free expression of visitors and muzzle dissent among activists both inside and outside the country despite promises to the contrary" is the sort of measure "that has been feared by those with misgivings about" the IOC's decision to award the Olympics to China. By barring Cheek and Greiner, China "sent a powerful worldwide message without having to bar actual participants in the Games." Team Darfur's Web Site lists 120 U.S. Olympians as members (WASHINGTON POST, 8/6). Cheek: "The denial of my visa is a part of a systemic effort by the Chinese government to coerce and threaten athletes who are speaking out on behalf of the innocent people of Darfur" (USA TODAY, 8/6). AROUND THE RINGS reports Cheek had planned to attend a U.N. Olympic celebration and "other charity events but insisted he was not planning any major Team Darfur demonstrations." BOCOG Media Dir Sun Weide said BOCOG is "looking into [Cheek's] circumstances," but added, "China has its own laws and regulations regarding visa applications" (AROUNDTHERINGS.com, 8/6). The Chinese government two weeks ago denied the visa of former Olympian Kendra Zanotto, who was to report on the Games for the Olympic News Service, reportedly because of her ties to Team Darfur (THE DAILY).

DON'T SPEAK: In DC, Sally Jenkins writes of China, "The only vision of the world that's permitted is their own, judging by the fact that [Cheek] was denied admittance to these Summer Games for the following offense: He spoke." These Olympics "might have been China's chance to present a new face to the world. Instead, the main impression one has so far is of the immense egotism of the Chinese state." Jenkins: "Ironically, the more the Chinese government tries to control speech at these Games, the more it flexes its power and enforces silence, the weaker it seems" (WASHINGTON POST, 8/6). Tribune Co. Olympic reporter Philip Hersh wrote the denial of Cheek's visa is "another sign of China's disdain for human rights and fair play, both alleged cornerstones of the Olympic Charter. And another sign of the shame the [IOC's] leadership has brought on itself and the upcoming Summer Games by not holding this repressive government accountable for promises of openness it made" when it awarded Beijing the event in '01 (LATIMES.com, 8/5). In Seattle, Ron Judd, who is not in Beijing, wrote of Cheek's ban, "So this is how it's going to go. The Chinese government will simply stonewall and deny complaints about any controversial facets of 'its' Olympics ... and the IOC will plead impotence" (SEATTLETIMES.com, 8/5).
