Beckham Takes Home Choice Male
Athlete Honors At Teen Choice Awards
MLB Commissioner BUD SELIG last night was among a group of people gathered at U.S. Cellular Field to pay tribute to late MLB historian and sports writer JEROME HOLTZMAN, who passed away last month. Selig said of Holtzman, "He was a great man. He was one of the greatest journalists I have ever known. And when I appointed him as baseball historian, I didn't realize how unique he really was. And I had known him a long time." White Sox Chair JERRY REINSDORF added, "[Holtzman] told me, 'You're too accessible. You shouldn't talk to (the media) as much as you do. You need to only talk when you have something to say'" (MLB.com, 8/5).

AND THE WINNER IS...: The 10th annual Teen Choice Awards aired last night on Fox, and U.S. gymnast Shawn Johnson won Choice Female Athlete, MLS Galaxy MF David Beckham won Choice Male Athlete and skateboarder Ryan Sheckler won Choice Action Sports Male and Choice MySpacer. Johnson was unable to attend due to the Olympics, but Beckham and Sheckler both accepted their awards on stage. Sheckler: “This is my first award so it’s cool.” IRL driver Danica Patrick also co-presented the award for Choice Summer Movie Action/Adventure (“Teen Choice 2008,” Fox, 8/4).

NAMES: Univ. of Tennessee (UT) women’s basketball coach PAT SUMMITT is donating $600,000 to the school to be shared by UT's Knoxville and Martin campuses. The donation will go "to support the women’s basketball programs" and includes a $100,000 scholarship for a graduate assistant position (AP, 8/4)....Ravens DE TREVOR PRYCE, an "up-and-coming screenwriter," has "several projects in the works, including a musical cartoon with Disney." Pryce also has a "family film set to be released by Sony Pictures by the end of next year" (DENVER POST, 8/4)....The Basketball HOF during its enshrinement ceremonies September 4 will award the second annual Mannie Jackson Basketball's Human Spirit Award to former NBAer DAVID ROBINSON and 76ers Exec Advisor SONNY HILL (PHILADELPHIA DAILY NEWS, 8/5)....Golf Pride has developed a red, white and blue club grip named the Patriot in conjunction with the PGA of America’s annual Patriot Golf Day. A portion of proceeds goes to the Folds of Honor Foundation, which provides scholarships to military families (THE DAILY)....Former NFLer Jerry Rice last night was as a contestant on ABC’s “Wanna Bet?” Rice finished in second place, winning a total of $36,000 for the DeBartolo Family Foundation and the S. F. 49ers Foundation (“Wanna Bet?,” ABC, 8/4)....More than 1,000 people last night showed up at National City's College Football Kickoff at Florida Atlantic Univ. to "listen and ask questions" of ESPN college football analyst KIRK HERBSTREIT. The event was sponsored by Cleveland-based bank National City and ESPN Radio 760 (PALM BEACH POST, 8/5).
