Lew Wolff Confident Cisco Field Will Happen Despite Delays

A's Owner Feels Confident Cisco
Field Will Be Built In Fremont
A's Owner Lew Wolff Thursday said that he is "frustrated at the lingering pace" of planning for the forthcoming Cisco Field in Fremont, California, but that he "ultimately thinks 'Ballpark Village' will rise," according to Lisa Fernandez of the SAN JOSE MERCURY NEWS. Wolff is "troubled about the length of time it's taking to satisfy major property owners near the proposed 32,000-seat Cisco Field and to complete an environmental review." Wolff on Wednesday said that he is "unsure if the team's attempt to build the state-of-the-art ballpark would fly." But Wolff Thursday said, "I still think it's going to happen. Otherwise I wouldn't be doing this." Fremont Mayor Bob Wasserman said that Wolff asked him to "talk to nearby property owners ProLogis and Pacific Commons to appease them about various concerns," but Wolff denied that he asked Wasserman to talk to the companies. A's co-Owner Keith Wolff said that "three of the larger Pacific Commons retailers have expressed concerns with the A's parking plan." While the retailers "can't block the project, the team wants to make sure they're satisfied." Lew Wolff said that there is "absolutely no similarity with parking concerns at his project and the 49ers' efforts to build a football stadium in Santa Clara" (SAN JOSE MERCURY NEWS, 8/1).

CAPITAL IDEA: In Sacramento, Bill Bradley writes, "Here's a way to make it easy, Lew: Move into [Sacramento's] Raley Field. You would have to add an upper deck for seats and suites, build an outfield pavilion to bring the facility to about 35,000 seats and extend the infrastructure and parking. That could be done in an offseason." Bradley added, "Can the Sacramento region support a [MLB] team? We don't have the corporations needed to buy the suites, but we have the ticket buyers" (SACRAMENTO BEE, 8/1).
