Blackhawks Hire HOF Coach Scotty Bowman In Adviser Role

Bowman Joining Blackhawks As
Senior Adviser For Hockey Operations
Hockey HOFer Scotty Bowman has signed a three-year contract to become the Blackhawk Senior Adviser for Hockey Operations, making him the "latest cog in a restructuring of the organization," according to Chris Kuc of the CHICAGO TRIBUNE. Bowman will serve as an adviser to Blackhawks GM Dale Tallon and Bowman's son, Assistant GM Stan Bowman. Scotty Bowman: "I liked that I could come in and be a good force with the team and also work with my son Stan" (CHICAGO TRIBUNE, 8/1). Bowman said that his role with the Blackhawks "will be similar to the one he had as a consultant" for the Red Wings (DETROIT FREE PRESS, 8/1). In Detroit, Bob Wojnowski writes Scotty Bowman, who left the Red Wings after 15 years (nine years as a head coach and the last six as a consultant), "wasn't pushed [to Chicago] -- he was pulled there for deep and important reasons." Bowman is "making the move he needed to make, to help support his family." If it "also invigorates him and stirs passion in the expanding Wings-Blackhawks rivalry, that's fine too" (DETROIT NEWS, 8/1). Stan Bowman "has been battling Hodgkin's lymphoma for the last 18 months but is on the road to recovery" (CHICAGO SUN-TIMES, 8/1). Stan Bowman: "For me, I have very fond memories of when I was my son's age, sitting around listening to my dad talk to coaches and talk hockey. That's the most exciting part now.  I can bring that into the mix" (SPORTING NEWS TODAY, 8/1). CSN Chicago's David Kaplan said Bowman “couldn’t have come cheaply to get him to do this … but again, (Blackhawks Chair) Rocky Wirtz, leaving no stone unturned in their quest to win.” Chicago Tribune reporter K.C. Johnson: “Obviously, it’s a nice coup but you’ve got to wonder how much it’s going to affect the on-ice product” (“Chicago Tribune Live,” CSN, 7/31).

OIL CHANGE: The Oilers Thursday promoted GM Kevin Lowe to President of Hockey Operations. The team also named Canucks VP/Hockey Operations & Assistant GM Steve Tambellini GM and promoted VP/Hockey Operations Kevin Prendergast to Assistant GM (Oilers). The GLOBE & MAIL's Allan Maki writes hiring Tambellini gives the Oilers "the kind of management depth patterned after" the Red Wings. Maki also notes Oilers Owner and Rexall Chair Daryl Katz is "interested in spreading the Rexall brand through sporting ventures." Lowe "will be involved ... as the Oilers pursue financial assistance through government and corporate channels" for a potential new arena in downtown Edmonton (GLOBE & MAIL, 8/1). But in Edmonton, Terry Jones writes Thursday's Oilers announcement "sounds like a bigger deal than it really is. Kevin Lowe is still the hockey boss. Period. He's still going to do all the big GM stuff." Still, "however you choose to view it, it says here the Oilers have just made a great move hiring, as Lowe puts it, the best executive in hockey who right now isn't" a GM (EDMONTON SUN, 8/1).
