CBS To Host College Fantasy Football Game
That Uses Players', Like Tebow, Real Names |
CBSSports.com yesterday announced plans to host a fantasy college football game using the actual names and stats of college players this season, and the site is "banking on becoming the first major fantasy provider to enter the industry's last major, unexplored sports frontier," according to Nando Di Fino of the WALL STREET JOURNAL. The site previously had developed a game "using generic terms including only a team and a position, like 'SYRACUSE RB' and 'MICHIGAN WR,' instead of players' names." However, due partially to the recent CDM/MLBAM U.S. Supreme Court decision, CBSSports.com will be able to use players' names. For instance, "FLORIDA QB" will be properly identified as Univ. of Florida QB Tim Tebow this year. NCAA Managing Dir of PR & Media Relations Bob Williams said that the NCAA has sent CBS a letter "informing them that their bylaws were being violated by using player likenesses in the game." However, he added that "because of the added exposure fantasy sports can bring the student-athlete, the NCAA does not intend to stand in the way of the fantasy game for now." Williams indicated that he "believes that the bylaws, which were enacted 'before new media,' do not properly address a situation like this." Di Fino noted the game will be run "using the same software and product design that CBSSports.com employs in its other fantasy games." The site also plans to launch a "similar college basketball game later this year" (WSJ.com, 7/29).
