ESPN Announces Plans To Launch New Action Sports Net This Fall

EXPN.com To Become Home
Of Action Sports Network
ESPN today announced the launch this fall of the ESPN Action Sports Network, an online HQs for the net's action sports content. The network will consist of interconnected sites including sport-specific ESPN.com sites as well as current top action sports sites including Surfline.com, Vans.com and Active Ride Shop. There will be video, audio, photography, social media, blogs and mobile content available. Also, ESPNews this fall will debut this fall a five-minute weekly feature called the "ESPN Action Sports Report," which will cover the latest news in the industry (ESPN). In L.A., Dawn Chmielewski reports the network will "encompass a cluster of Internet sites, each devoted to a specific 'action sport,' to offer coverage of events that aren't usually carried on mainstream television." The move "seeks to establish online what [ESPN] did more than a decade ago in television when it created the X Games." ESPN Digital Media Action Sports Dir Dave Finger said, "We felt like we were missing out on covering action sports with the same voice and authenticity that we bring to stick and ball." Finger added the net's current EXPN.com Web site will become the home for the Action Sports Network. The Web site will offer "more original digital programs such as 'Guerilla Cam,' which takes fans behind the scenes of events," and it also will "provide exclusive content and 'first looks' at sports films." ESPN aims to "draw the audience for extreme sports to the online world," and Jupiter Research indicated that avid sports fans "spend nearly as much time watching video streams and reading and posting on blogs as they do sitting in front of the television" (L.A. TIMES, 7/30).
