Environmentalists Protest ExxonMobil Ads At Nationals Park

Environmentalists Upset With ExxonMobil's
Advertisements At Nationals Park
The Nationals, whose new ballpark is the country's "first certified green major professional sports stadium," are the "focus of protests from environmentalists who say their issue is not with the stadium, but with the Nationals' advertising relationship" with ExxonMobil, according to Bernie Becker of the N.Y. TIMES. ExxonMobil's logo "appears prominently on the [Nationals Park] left-field wall and is frequently featured on the stadium's scoreboard." Leaders from Strike Out Exxon, a combination of environmental, civic and faith-based groups, said that "despite the stadium's recognition for Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design by the United States Green Building Council, ExxonMobil's involvement has erased any good will." ExxonMobil PR Manager Alan Jeffers said that the Nationals "approached the company with an advertising deal, which the company agreed to as a way of highlighting its commitment to energy efficiency." ExxonMobil for a nine-game home stand in June "teamed with the Alliance to Save Energy, a nonpartisan, nonprofit agency that emphasizes energy efficiency, to offer energy-saving tips at the new stadium." ExxonMobil will "continue to sponsor the tips for the rest of the season." A Nationals spokesperson said that the team "did not comment on the terms or details of its advertising deals." Protests began in June, and Strike Out Exxon's Mike Tidwell said that demonstrations will "continue until the last Nationals home game in September" (N.Y. TIMES, 7/27).
