Big East Created Package For SNY From
Existing Deal With ESPN And ABC
In N.Y., Richard Sandomir reports the package of Big East football and basketball games that has been sold to SportsNet N.Y. (SNY) was "carved out of the conference's existing national contract with ESPN and ABC." Big East consultant Kevin O'Malley: "When we redid the deal with ESPN and ABC, we looked at crafting this unique relationship with SNY." MSG Network will "continue to have a small Big East basketball deal" (N.Y. TIMES, 7/24). Also in N.Y., Lenn Robbins reports ESPN and ABC will "retain the right to televise one or more Big East football games in their national Saturday windows, but SNY should be able to offer a quality league game every Saturday" (N.Y. POST, 7/24).

BUNDESLIGA: BLOOMBERG NEWS's Holger Elfes reports Germany's Federal Cartel Office (FCO) has said that the German Bundesliga "must be made available for broadcast on free-to-air television" before 8:00pm local time, voiding a deal between the league and KirchGroup Founder Leo Kirch. FCO President Bernhard Heitzer said that free TV stations "must be given the opportunity to show game summaries in the early evening" (BLOOMBERG NEWS, 7/24).

QUICK START: TSN, in its first season of CFL exclusivity, is averaging 362,000 viewers per game through four weeks, up 11% over 326,000 average viewers through Week Four last year when games aired on both TSN and the CBC. The viewership represents the strongest-ever start for the CFL through 16 games (TSN).

PRIMETIME PLAYER: In Orlando, Limon & Carter report the Univ. of Central Florida (UCF) has reached a deal with Clear Channel Radio Orlando under which football coach George O'Leary's call-in radio show will move to a primetime slot on WFLA-AM. Under the deal, UCF's marketing department also "will have promotions running on all seven of Clear Channel's Orlando radio stations throughout the year and UCF athletics will be featured on all the stations' Web sites" (ORLANDO SENTINEL, 7/24).
