Sawgrass CC Nearing Agreement To Host WTA Tour Tourney
Sawgrass Country Club in Ponte Vedra Beach, Florida, "could have an agreement within the next week" with Octagon Enterprises, the principal of the former Sony Ericsson WTA Tour Bausch & Lomb Championships, to host the annual tournament, according to Dave Strupp of the JACKSONVILLE BUSINESS JOURNAL. Sawgrass officials said that they are "in the process of going over a first draft of an agreement," and Octagon said that it "has had contact with several potential sponsors for the tournament." While Amelia Island Plantation has hosted the event for the past 29 years, Amelia Island Chamber of Commerce Dir of Tourism Gil Langley said that "current negotiations with a title sponsor would require the tournament be moved to Sawgrass." Octagon Dir of PR & Marketing Sandy Cavanaugh said that while Amelia "has been an ideal host for the tournament, Octagon is looking at all possibilities to keep the tournament in Northeast Florida." Strupp noted if Sawgrass were to host the tournament, it "would have to accelerate its current capital improvements, which were planned over the next five years." Bausch & Lomb decided to pull its sponsorship of the tournament, which drew "about 40,000 to 50,000 spectators last year," after the "creation of federal legislation that made it illegal for the company to entertain doctors" (BIZJOURNALS.com, 7/22).
