Yankees officials announced they will allow fans to "bring their sunblock in any size container they want" after admitting a previous ban on sunscreen in containers larger than 3 ounces was "too stringent." Fans previously had been "forced to toss their sunscreen before being allowed into the Stadium, a measure the Yankees insisted was necessary to prevent terrorists from concealing liquid explosives." The Yankees still will not allow sunscreen in aerosol cans (N.Y. POST, 7/23).

Mariners Still Drawing Fans To Safeco
Field Despite AL-Worst Record
WHO CARES IF WE WIN? In Seattle, Geoff Baker writes "very few teams in [MLB] lose quite like the Mariners while still drawing fans." The Mariners, who own the worst record in the AL, are averaging 29,103 fans per game at Safeco Field this season, down almost 4,000 per game compared to '07. However, that is "better than many other sub-.400 teams could hope for." Only the Yankees and Tigers are averaging more home fans per victory in the AL (SEATTLE TIMES, 7/23).

FADE TO BLACK: In Raleigh, Luke DeCock reported the Hurricanes this season will unveil an alternate third jersey and the team hopes "to have it ready to reveal" at the team's Caniac Carnival on September 21. Hurricane officials have previously discussed having a black jersey with the team's logo on the chest. As many as 18 NHL teams this season could produce new alternate jerseys, so "production delays could jeopardize Carolina's launch schedule" (Raleigh NEWS & OBSERVER, 7/19).

RUNNING ON ICE: Indianapolis is "in line to get another minor league hockey team." Upstart Midwest Hockey League President Wade Stuckey yesterday said that the Indianapolis Trax would play in the four-team league, set to begin play in November with franchises in Evansville, Indiana; Columbus, Indiana; and Louisville. The league will include players aged 18 years and older (Kyle Neddenriep, INDIANAPOLIS STAR, 7/23).
