NFL Franchise Notes: Goodell Wants Favre Situation Expedited

Packers Reportedly Starting To See If
Teams Are Interested In Trading For Favre
ESPN’s Chris Mortensen reported the Packers have “absolutely made phone calls" regarding a possible trade of retired QB Brett Favre, and they "did so, I believe, after (NFL Commissioner) Roger Goodell got involved and encouraged the Packers to accelerate the process.” Goodell was briefed on the situation by Packers GM Ted Thompson, where he "assured Ted Thompson that if Brett Favre applies for reinstatement he is going to reinstate him." Mortensen: "What I was told was that Thompson did make it clear to the commissioner that the Packers desire to move on without Brett and the commissioner therefore said, ‘Then move on and start making calls’” (“SportsCenter,” ESPN, 7/22). ESPN's Skip Bayless said, "Thankfully, the Commissioner got involved because he had to get involved for the good of the very big business that he operates.” But ESPN's Stephen A. Smith said Goodell “doesn’t necessarily need to be involved." Smith: "As the commissioner of this league, did it ever occur to you by making a decision to get involved, he is essentially tampering with individual teams and their business?” (“ESPN First Take,” ESPN, 7/23).

SPEAKING OF TAMPERING: In Minneapolis, Judd Zulgad cites sources who reported that members of the NFL security department yesterday interviewed Vikings officials "regarding the tampering charges" the Packers filed against the team for alleged contact with Favre. It is believed that NFL officials spoke to Vikings coach Brad Childress and offensive coordinator Darrell Bevell (Minneapolis STAR TRIBUNE, 7/23).

FRESH START: Bengals President Mike Brown yesterday took part in a Q&A with the DAYTON DAILY NEWS' Chick Ludwig. When asked if the team had "turned the corner on the 'character' issue" following the release of LB Odell Thurman and WR Chris Henry, said, "I regret what's happened to them, and I regret they're no longer here. Things just conspired to undo them." But he added, "We don't want that kind of behavior. We've tried to be more conscious of the guys we bring in than maybe we were before. We're going forward and will try to go forward with the kind of guys we can count on, who are not just good players, but good citizens" (DAYTON DAILY NEWS, 7/23).

CASTING A LINE: Last night’s edition of HBO’s “Real Sports” profiled Dolphins EXEC VP/Football Operations Bill Parcells. HBO’s Andrea Kremer said Parcells “is overhauling the team from the top down, (and) there may be no coach in NFL history as successful in transforming a losing team into a winning one.” When asked if he would call down to the sidelines during games and offer coaching advice, Parcells scoffed at the idea and said, “No, absolutely not. You’ll never have to worry about that.” Parcells has a four-year contract with the Dolphins, but Kremer noted he "won’t commit to seeing it through.” HBO’s Bryant Gumbel said Parcells is “unofficially their expected savior” (“Real Sports,” HBO, 7/22).

NOTES: Giants co-Owner John Mara said that the team "likely will remain" at the Univ. of Albany through next summer as the site of training camp. The contract between the team and the school expires after this season's camp, but the Giants "can exercise an option to continue the contract through 2009." Mara said that the Giants "probably will do that." The club has held training camp at UA for 13 years (Albany TIMES UNION, 7/19)....The Cardinals said that they have sold around 57,000-58,000 season tickets this year, but they are "running slightly behind their sellout pace of the past couple of years." The team would "like to sell about 60,000 and have about 3,000 or so in reserve to sell on an individual-game basis" (EAST VALLEY TRIBUNE, 7/22).
