Radio Station Distributing T-Shirts Of Royals P Joakim Soria

K.C.-based WHB-AM is distributing free T-shirts featuring Royals P Joakim Soria and his nickname, "The Mexicutioner," and the shirts have become "very popular in the Royals' clubhouse," according to Jeffrey Flanagan of the K.C. STAR. WHB Sports Dir Kevin Kietzman said that the station, which asks for a $5 charitable donation for each shirt, "will have unloaded 5,000 of them by the end of the week." Despite some people thinking the nickname is "offensive or racially insensitive," the shirts "immediately got Soria's blessing." The T-shirts "display a fictional movie poster starring Soria," with other Royals players mentioned underneath. Royals RF Jose Guillen is listed as being in charge of media relations, a "poke at Guillen's tendency to speak frankly." Royals officials have not commented publicly on the T-shirts because they are "simply trying to be sensitive to their rights holder, Entercom," which owns rival radio station KCSP-AM (K.C. STAR, 7/22).
