Glendale, Arizona, Nears Deal To Secure HQs For USA Basketball

Colangelo Says Deal To Bring USA Basketball
HQs To Arizona Could Be Done This Week
An agreement in principle could be reached as early as next week "for USA Basketball ... to move its headquarters to Glendale," according to Craig Harris of the ARIZONA REPUBLIC. Suns Chair and USA Basketball Managing Dir Jerry Colangelo said that the "best-case scenario is to have something in writing before all the principals involved with USA Basketball head to China on Friday for the Olympics." Colangelo: "It appears there is a lot of progress being made." Glendale is one of three finalists to land the HQs, along with Louisville and current home Colorado Springs. USA Basketball Assistant Exec Dir Craig Miller said that "details are being worked out with all the cities and added that a decision had not been made." However, Colangelo said "everything was moving in the right direction" for Glendale. He added that he was "very optimistic" the city would land the HQs. City officials said that Glendale has "enhanced its proposal by bringing in at least five business partners who would be responsible for helping build a training complex and office space." Glendale City Manager Ed Beasley did not reveal the identities of the partners, but he said that the offer "also would include sports medicine, fitness, education and entertainment components in addition to USA Basketball facilities." Harris noted it was the "first time the city had acknowledged that it was collaborating with a specific number of businesses." Beasley added that if Glendale lands the NGB, the HQs would be located near University of Phoenix Stadium, Jobing.com Arena and the new joint Dodgers-White Sox Spring Training facility. City officials have not said how much they would spend on the HQs (ARIZONA REPUBLIC, 7/19).
