Angels' Enhanced Clean-Up Efforts Lower Health-Code Violations

Angel Stadium Beefs Up Clean-Up Efforts
To Lower Number Of Health-Code Violations
Health inspectors at Angel Stadium since August have found "only scattered traces of rats or other vermin," and the "most recent round of inspections, completed earlier this month, turned up only one vermin violation," according to Doug Irving of the ORANGE COUNTY REGISTER. An investigation by the Orange County Register last year "counted dozens of vermin violations at the stadium." And county inspectors had "found 118 vermin violations at Angel Stadium food kiosks and restaurants since 2005." More than "a third of those violations -- 33 -- involved 'rodent activity' in a critical area and were deemed major." Since the newspaper report, inspectors have "issued 23 more vermin violations at the stadium, none of them major." Angel Stadium food stands "have racked up 152 health-code violations since January -- all but two of them minor." Last year, inspectors wrote up more than 400 violations between January and mid-July. There have been only 25 inspections of stadium food stands since Opening Day this year, while stadium food venues were visited 59 times last year between April and mid-July. Orange County Health Care Agency Dir of Environmental Health Richard Sanchez: "If the question is: Have we seen improvement? Yes, we have." Irving noted the Angels have "started paying workers extra to stay late and clean up after night games, rather than leave the sticky detritus of tens of thousands of fans lying out for hours." The team also "has hired exterminators, set out traps and patched holes in the walls to keep any scavengers out." Aramark, the food contractor for Angel Stadium restaurants, now "requires its managers to do a nightly cleaning inspection before they leave." City of Anaheim Dir of Convention, Sports & Entertainment Greg Smith said the Angels since last year "have stepped up ... they're doing a good job complying with the health code." Angels VP/Communications Tim Mead: "Our program is in place and we're satisfied with our maintenance. Is the (rodent) issue behind us? Yes. Absolutely. But that doesn't mean we stop looking for ways to better our systems, better our programs" (ORANGE COUNTY REGISTER, 7/17).
