Top Rank Chair BOB ARUM said that middleweight champion KELLY PAVLIK will move up a weight class and fight a non-title bout against former light heavyweight champion BERNARD HOPKINS October 18 at Boardwalk Hall in Atlantic City. The fight will be broadcast on HBO PPV. Arum and Golden Boy Promotions CEO RICHARD SCHAEFER, who agreed to the deal Thursday, had "briefly discussed the fight a few weeks ago, but they couldn't come to terms." Arum said that the two sides have since "agreed to split the revenue 50-50" (ESPN.com, 7/17).

BOOK SHELF: USA TODAY's Dennis Moore, in a review of DAVID MARANISS' new book, "ROME 1960: THE OLYMPICS THAT CHANGED THE WORLD," wrote Maraniss' "remarkably exhaustive research enables him to recount events in minute detail." However, Maraniss "often embellishes them with overly dramatic symbolism." Moore wrote despite the title, it is "hyperbolic to say the Games themselves altered people's perception of the world" (USA TODAY, 7/14)....The initial print order of 100,000 for Ohio State Univ. football coach JIM TRESSEL's book "THE WINNERS MANUAL," is "almost sold out already" (Cleveland PLAIN DEALER, 7/15).

BIG PICTURE: Maloof Productions Chair & CEO Phil Maloof, brother of NBA Kings co-Owners Joe and Gavin Maloof, said the company is in talks with Columbian officials about acquiring the movie rights to the story of how 15 hostages held by a Columbian rebel group for five years were rescued. Maloof has made an offer to former hostage Ingrid Betancourt, a former Columbian presidential candidate. Maloof: “Hopefully, within the next couple of weeks we’ll know whether or not she goes with us” (“Showbiz Tonight,” CNN, 7/17).

Sheppard previously was repped by All Pro Sports & Entertainment's PETER SCHAFFER and LAMONT SMITH (PHILADELPHIA DAILY NEWS, 7/17)....Wednesday's eighth annual ESPY Celebrity Golf Classic at the Industry Hills GC at Pacific Palms in Industry Hills, California, raised $1M in net proceeds for The V Foundation for Cancer Research.
