USATF has named former MLS Commissioner Doug Logan as CEO, effective Monday, filling the position left vacant since Craig Masback in January left to become Nike Global Sports Marketing Dir of Business Affairs. Logan, approved Thursday by the USATF BOD, was a unanimous selection of the organization's CEO Selection Committee after a three-month search. Since leaving MLS in '99, Logan has run N.Y.-based sports consulting firm Empresario, LLC, which in '01 was a consultant in the creation of the National Rugby League (USATF). Since Masback left, USATF has been led by a "committee of four staff members," including President Bill Roe (AP).
PICK UP SPEED: Roe Wednesday participated in a Q&A with the WALL STREET JOURNAL's Dan Bollerman for the paper's "Long Toss" feature. Roe, when asked how track can "build on the interest it generates every four years during the Olympics during times when it's not as much in the American consciousness," said, "I think more shows with more interest and a little better publicity -- letting people continually have more opportunities to find us. I'm a big supporter of the idea of the [USOC] coming up with an Olympic network. ... It would help us increase our signal; it would help gymnastics, swimming, and other sports which are also thought of as Olympic sports that only come around every so often" (WSJ.com, 7/16).
