Capitals Owner Helps Launch Web Site
Offering Full-Length Documentaries
Capitals Owner TED LEONSIS' SnagFilms debuts today, targeting the "social-networking crowd with a website that offers full-length documentaries that can be shared on blogs, websites and personal pages on Facebook and MySpace." Leonsis started SnagFilms with AOL Founder STEVE CASE and venture capitalist MILES GILBURNE. SnagFilms launches with 250 films from producers including National Geographic, PBS and IndiePix, and each film on the site "has links to donate" to philanthropic organizations (USA TODAY, 7/17). Leonsis said that to generate revenue each documentary will "include 90 seconds of advertising per hour, broken up into 15-second segments." The advertising is being sold through AOL (WASHINGTON POST, 7/17).

AND THE NOMINEES ARE...: Nominees for the 60th Emmy Awards were announced this morning, and NBC’s “Friday Night Lights” is up for “Outstanding Casting For A Drama Series,” while the show’s “Spotlight On Austin” special was nominated for “Outstanding Special Class - Short-Format Live-Action Entertainment Programs.” In addition, ESPN’s “The Bronx Is Burning” was nominated for “Outstanding Casting For A Miniseries, Movie Or A Special,” and Fox’ Super Bowl XLII Halftime Show featuring TOM PETTY and the Heartbreakers was nominated in the “Outstanding Sound Mixing For A Variety, Music Series Or A Special” category. Also, FedEx’s “Carrier Pigeons” spot, via BBDO, N.Y., and Coca-Cola’s “It’s Mine” commercial, via Wieden & Kennedy, Portland, which both premiered during the Super Bowl, are up for “Outstanding Commercial” (THE DAILY).

DONATIONS: Packers coach MIKE MCCARTHY, a Pittsburgh-native, as part of the five-year extension he signed with the team in January, has made a joint contribution with the Packers of $100,000 to three organizations in the Greenfield neighborhood in Pittsburgh. McCarthy's former grade school St. Rosalia's Academy "received the largest part of the donation" (Pittsburgh TRIBUNE-REVIEW, 7/17)....North Carolina gubernatorial candidate and Charlotte Mayor PAT MCCRORY has "picked up at least $70,000" from motorsports execs. Donors include NASCAR Chair & CEO BRIAN FRANCE, Hendrick Motorsports Owner RICK HENDRICK, Gillett Evernham Motorsports co-Owner RAY EVERNHAM and Chip Ganassi Racing co-Owner FELIX SABATES (Raleigh NEWS & OBSERVER, 7/17).
