Larry Miller Names Son, Greg, CEO Of Jazz' Parent Company

Larry Miller Names Son CEO Of
Larry H. Miller Group Of Companies
Jazz Owner Larry Miller, "still hospitalized after five weeks because of complications from diabetes," yesterday named his son, Greg Miller, CEO of the Larry H. Miller Group of Companies, which includes the Jazz, according to Ross Siler of the SALT LAKE TRIBUNE. Greg Miller, who for the past two years has worked at the Miller Motorsports Park, has "not been involved with the Jazz," has never represented the team at the NBA's BOG meetings and said that he "hasn't talked to his father about assuming the responsibility." Greg Miller added that there will be "no changes within the Jazz's operations," and he was "unequivocal in saying that ownership of the Jazz would remain in the Miller family." The company's holdings also include the 10th largest auto dealership in the U.S., movie theaters, commercial real estate properties, retail stores and a TV station. Larry Miller will serve as Chair of a newly created 10-member BOG for the company. Since Larry Miller's June 10 hospitalization, the family has "closely guarded the state of his health," but Greg Miller yesterday indicated that his father is in a "rehabilitation unit undergoing physical therapy to regain his strength, energy and mobility." There is no timetable for Larry Miller's release from the hospital (SALT LAKE TRIBUNE, 7/17). Greg Miller said that the "change in the company's leadership should be barely noticeable." The Larry H. Miller Group also owns the Triple-A PCL Salt Lake Bees, The Fan Sports Network, which includes KJZZ-Ind, KFAN-AM and ESPN Radio 1230, Fanzz Sports Apparel and the Utah Jazz Store (DESERET NEWS, 7/17).

CHANGING OF THE GUARD?: In Utah, Tim Buckley notes it "remains to be seen just how much [Larry Miller] will stay involved in the team's day-to-day operations." The "likelihood seems a lot," but "no one's sure." Greg Miller "admittedly knows little about daily Jazz operations." He "suggested he has no knowledge of details regarding the team's most-pressing matter at the moment," contract negotiations with G Deron Williams. Greg Miller said that his father will "retain for now his seat" on the NBA's BOG, but that "potential succession to the seat will be discussed sometime in the future." Jazz President Randy Rigby said Larry Miller has been "as involved in the past month as much as he's been previously" (DESERET NEWS, 7/17). Greg Miller: "I've got to become a student of the business and of the game and get more involved now." In Utah, Kurt Kragthorpe notes Greg Miller is "sure to be more reserved" than Larry Miller, and the Jazz "will operate in a more traditional fashion." Rigby, GM Kevin O'Connor and coach Jerry Sloan will "have more influence than before" (SALT LAKE TRIBUNE, 7/17).
