Donaghy Placed Phone Calls To Another Referee While Gambling

Foster Was Recipient Of 134 Phone Calls
From Donaghy During '06-07 Season
Former NBA referee Tim Donaghy made 134 phone calls to referee Scott Foster "at the same time he provided inside information to professional gamblers during the course" of the '06-07 NBA season, according to court documents and phone records cited by Jana Winter of FOXNEWS.com. The records indicate Donaghy's calls to Foster are "more than the 126 calls Donaghy made to his bookie" between October '06-April '07, the period during which he "confessed to either betting on games or passing on game information to gamblers." The majority of the phone calls "lasted no more than two minutes and occurred prior to and after games Donaghy officiated and on which he admits wagering." Donaghy had "three other cell phone numbers registered in his name, all of which he used," but he called Foster "using the phone the feds say he designated for mostly gambling-related use." The most calls Donaghy placed to any other referee during the period was 13. Sources said that Donaghy's conversations with Foster and others "have led authorities to suspect the NBA betting scandal goes beyond Donaghy." Winter noted Donaghy and Foster "did not referee a single game together during" the '06-07 season. Foster said when asked if he was being investigated by the league or the government, "Not that I know of" (FOXNEWS.com, 7/14).

FOSTER'S INVOLVEMENT DOUBTED: NBA sources who "know Donaghy and Foster -- who were close friends -- strongly doubted yesterday that Foster would be involved with illegal gambling." One source: "Scott is a good guy, and it bothers me to think his name should even come up in any of this. This is another case of the media trying to stir something from nothing. There's no way Scott Foster had anything to do with Donaghy's gambling." The NBA last night said in a statement that the "disclosure of Donaghy's phone calls is old news to prosecutors" (PHILADELPHIA DAILY NEWS, 7/15).
