Abramovich Pays $500M
For La Leopolda Estate
In L.A., Larry Gordon reports Ducks Owner HENRY SAMUELI's name "could be stripped from engineering schools at UCLA and UC Irvine as a result of his recent guilty plea to a felony charge of lying to federal regulators." Officials said that the Univ. of California's General Counsel is launching a "review of the issue." UC's "policy on such matters is vague, and questions of timing and what factors should be considered have yet to be determined" (L.A. TIMES, 7/11).

CA-CHING! English Premier League club Chelsea Owner ROMAN ABRAMOVICH has paid US$500M to acquire La Leopolda, the world's most expensive house located near Monte Carlo, from LILY SAFRA, the widow of J.E. Safra Bank Founder EDMUND SAFRA. The 10-acre property originally was built for Belgium's KING LEOPOLD's mistresses, and past owners have included former Microsoft Chair BILL GATES (WEALTH-BULLETIN.com, 7/11)....Golfer GREG NORMAN has to pay $103M to ex-wife LAURA ANDRASSY as part of their divorce settlement. The settlement "could be one of Martin County's [FL] highest postnup paydays and among the top 20 in South Florida" (PALM BEACH POST, 7/11).

MARK-ING HIS SPOT: Career Sports & Entertainment President of Media & Marketing MARK LAZARUS, who formerly worked as Turner Sports President, when asked about working with ESPN in his new role, Lazarus said, "I think I have a pretty good and broad understanding of what many of the networks -- what their programming goals are and the audiences they serve. So I'll take that and marry it with concepts and ideas to pitch to them with knowledge that'll get them thinking about their brand and their schedules and their audiences" (ADAGE.com, 7/10).

Team's Male Dance Team
BULKING UP: Bulls Exec VP/Business Operations STEVE SCHANWALD said that the team has had conversations about a feature-length film based on the Bulls' Matadors, the team's "rotund male cheerleaders." Schanwald said the film is a "long way from being a done deal at this point." Disney optioned a script titled "The Matadors," and former Lakers dancer ANNE FLETCHER has been tapped to direct the film, about a "pair of superfans who start up a professional male cheerleading team" (CHICAGO SUN-TIMES, 7/11).

NAMES: Former BILL CLINTON aide LANNY DAVIS said that he supported U.S. Sen. HILLARY CLINTON (D-NY) in her presidential candidacy "alienating him" from his son, CBS' SETH DAVIS, who supports U.S. Sen. BARACK OBAMA (D-IL). However, Lanny Davis said that the two are "together again" (WASHINGTON POST, 7/10)....Former ATPer ANDRE AGASSI this year will move his October 11 Grand Slam for Children event to the Wynn Las Vegas, a smaller venue than the previous host, the MGM Grand Garden, where it had been held for 12 years. Tickets for the event at the Wynn "will be much higher" (LAS VEGAS REVIEW-JOURNAL, 7/11)....Red Sox P JOSH BECKETT Thursday night hosted his second annual Beckett Bowl, a charity event at the Town Line Ten Pin in Malden, Massachusetts. Many of Beckett's Red Sox teammates were in attendance, as were former NESN sports caster HAZEL MAE and rapper DMC (BOSTON GLOBE, 7/11).
