Brewers' Ticket Sales Up Threefold
Since Making Trade For Sabathia |
The Brewers have sold about 70,000 tickets -- “about three times the normal rate” -- since trading for P CC Sabathia Monday, and the club's current 10-game home stand that ends Sunday will mark the "most successful home stand in Milwaukee baseball history,” according to Don Walker of the MILWAUKEE JOURNAL SENTINEL. The team will draw more than 400,000 fans for the 10-game set, putting them "well on track to hit 3 million in attendance [for the season], a franchise record.” The Brewers through Thursday have drawn 1,608,723 fans, an average of 35,749 per game. Brewers Exec VP/Business Operations Rick Schlesinger said the team has not "experienced any effects of a disturbed economy," unlike other MLB franchises. Walker reports the Brewers this week began offering fans a 20/20 ticket package, which gives the right to buy ’08 playoff tickets to fans who buy a 20-game package this year and put a deposit down on a 20-game package for next season. Meanwhile, the team hired a local vendor to print Sabathia T-shirts “for corporate sponsor use” prior to his first start with the team on Tuesday, and Schlesinger said that apparel maker Majestic “was churning out more Sabathia T-shirts and jerseys” (MILWAUKEE JOURNAL-SENTINEL, 7/11).
THE HART FOUNDATION: Brewers RF Corey Hart won the fans’ vote for the final NL roster spot for Tuesday’s All-Star Game at Yankee Stadium, receiving 8 million votes. Rays 3B Evan Longoria won the AL roster spot with 9 million votes (MLB). In N.Y., Joshua Robinson notes the Brewers plastered “I Hart New York” across Milwaukee and Miller Park, while the Rays “focused on simply bombarding the locals and its employees with an order to vote.” All week, “mannequins wearing Longoria T-shirts cropped up around Tampa, Fla., and the Rays employees were each told to spend an hour voting for their colleague” (N.Y. TIMES, 7/11). In Milwaukee, Michael Hunt writes, “Whether it’s healthy for a populace to be so occupied with its sports team is best left to the shrinks, but the fact is that Corey Hart was voted onto the NL all-star team ahead of players from two of the country’s largest metropolitan areas [Philadelphia and N.Y.]” (MILWAUKEE JOURNAL SENTINEL, 7/11).
