NHL, Maple Leafs At Odds Over Euro Player's Free Agent Status

NHL Rejects Maple Leafs'
Contract For Sweden's Frogren
The NHL has rejected the Maple Leafs' contract offer to Swedish D Jonas Frogren, "foreshadowing a precedent-setting battle for late-blooming European players who have never played in the NHL," according to Kevin McGran of the TORONTO STAR. The Leafs and Frogren had "agreed to terms on a two-year deal believed to be worth $2.1[M]." But the NHL believes Frogren "is a rookie and subject to an entry-level contract," which would mean he would be "limited to a one-year term, earning as little as $450,000." Both the Leafs and Frogren's agent Don Meehan "believe Frogren is an unrestricted free agent." Meehan said that the NHLPA "will decide on whether to grieve the NHL's ruling." The dispute "could end in an arbitrator's hands" (TORONTO STAR, 7/10).

GROWING PAYROLLS: The GLOBE & MAIL's Tim Wharnsby writes since the lockout that canceled the '04-05 season, "more than a few folks in the hockey world asked why a lockout was necessary, given the number of big-money deals that have been done since NHL free agency kicked in on July 1." However, NHL Deputy Commissioner Bill Daly said, "The amount of money spent this week itself does not cause concern and it should not send a mixed message. What it says is that the NHL's business is a lot bigger today than it was five years ago, roughly to the tune of almost $600[M] bigger. The lockout was never about lowering player salaries per se, it was about making sure that what our clubs pay our players bears a reasonable relationship to the revenues the sport generates" (GLOBE & MAIL, 7/10).
